It’s a bit rich

It’s a bit rich

Hmm. Well how exciting.  The Sunday Times today was blowing its own trumpet by publishing its annual tribute to the most successful tax dodgers in the country.  Or as you and I know it – the Rich List.

Now forgive me for being remarkably uninterested in people who were either born with money, made money – or indeed have a foot in both camps.  You see I simply do not believe what I am being invited to read.

Let me explain by giving a sample of one.  I support Ipswich Town – a pretty dire second division team who made themselves insolvent.  The wreckage was picked up for a song by some gent called Marcus Evans who appears to run a dubious commission-led business flogging pointless symposia and meetings.  Yopu know the sort of rubbish… somebody rings up some bored execs.  And if they are mad enough to agree to go to a conference – then the chinless wonders at the Marcus Evans grouyp will suddenly arrange said conference,

Aside from a bit of ticket-touting, I think that is all Marcus Evans does. Although he does seem remarkably successful at hiding.  As far as I know, no photo of his mysterious presence exists. .Anyway – if we accept that the global market for corporate junkets has gone backwards a bit in recent years – then any assessment of the elusive Mr Evans’ wealth must perhaps be guessed from his involvement with Ipswich.

And here too the news if far from sparkly.  Before Evans was gifted the club by the incompetent David Sheepshanks, Ipswich were a busted flush, but riding high in 6th place in the second division.  Since the invisible man arrived Town have gone into abrupt reverse, despite being allowed to spend vast sums of money on rubbish players and a rubbish manager – all at a high rate of interest of course.

But so far, Evans’ investment in Ipswich has yielded precisely nothing… and cost him a few million.  So on that basis, if his other investments are just as dud – he is worth a lot less than nothing.  SO how do the Sunday Times make that equate to £500 million?
