Legal Eagles

Hands up if you loathe solicitors?  I do – and with good reason.  After estate agents and politicians these are probably the third most loathed ‘profession’ on the planet.  Yet the strange thing is – apart for some minor clerical work called conveyancing we probably never have need for them.  So why do we find the legal profession so vile?

The slime balls we see in films might be something to do with it.  As might the fact that all the dull kids at school wanted to be solicitors. But I am sure our loathing goes much deeper than that.  We know these dull clerks are ripping us off – with enormous and unjustifiable bills for their professional services.

The main reason we detest lawyers is that they seem to be such parasites.  Their cause is not helped by all those dreadful adverts you see on television. Part of the problem seems to be the concept that an accident has to be somebody’s fault.  And everybody is entitled to compensation.  Starting with the third rate actors who front up the sharks.

So let’s imagine you are unlucky enough to be in an accident…either in a car.  Or you fall over – or off your ladder.  Why do these legal eagles jump to your assistance for no fee?  Presumably the concept that you might be bright enough to realise that their fees come from somewhere does not enter their greedy little minds.

But even though we know next to nothing about them, I suspect most of us will be googling no win no fee solicitors next time we are in an accident.  It’s  the prospect of easy money which is so irresistible.  And the ironic thing is, easy money is why people become solicitors.  So the bizarre concept of lawyers who will work for you for nothing is the exact antithesis of what the law stands for… making its practitioners richer at our expe
