We are all being watched

What is it with this country’s seeming obsession with security cameras?  If they actually worked or had any value at all there would be no or very little crime.  But no – all you ever see on security camera footage is a grainy view of somebody with their hoodie pulled up waltzing into an off-licence or shop to steal some money.

I even found myself being filmed when I queued up in the bank the other day.  It would be a remarkably well-behaved bank robber who intended to queue up and wait his turn.  But if he ever turns up = the Nat West will be waiting for him.

So what is the point of all this CCTV?  I can only think that the idea that Big Brother is watching you is somehow supposed to make us all behave a bit better.  But of course we don’t.

So imagine what it must be like working behind the scenes at one of those CCTV monitoring systems.  If you spend all night watching the CCTV footage in a town centre you might see somebody throwing up or pissing against a wall.  But you won’t be able to see who it is – because all CCTV seems to do is provide grainy footage of indeterminate people after the event.

And that’s all they seem capable of doing.  If you want some footage of deranged psychopaths with rucksacks full of high explosives – then CCTV will eventually find them… several days after they have blow themselves to bits on London Transport..  Which again begs the question – why bother.  They don’t stop crime and they don’t seem to help in the detection of crime.  Maybe it has something to do with insurance companies in a scam with CCTV manufacturers.  That’s the only thing that would make any sense in the mysterious world of CCTV cameras and the people behind them.
