Paris Hilton Finds Fame

I see today that the erstwhile porn video star and self-proclaimed Socialite Paris Hilton has been immortalised in the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, alongside Nobel Prize winners, philosophers and presidents.   Fashion advice from the 28-year-old heiress is one of 20,000 new entries in the prestigious book.

“Dress cute wherever you go, life is too short to blend in,” was worthy of inclusion, editors decided.  I must remember that in future.  I never thought Paris was so busy she could not find time to get the servants to use the blender.

These immortalised words of wisdom will now join quotes from physicist Stephen Hawking, Burmese democracy campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi and US founding father Thomas Jefferson.  Far be it from me to criticise – but either standards are slipping, or even dictionaries have now gone celebrity mad.

Paris shared the news with her Twitter followers, of which I am course am now one, posting: “So cool that I have a quote in the dictionary.”  It would be cool if she could read… but I suspect she only looks at photos of herself.

The fragrant Paris has always refuted accusations she is a “spoilt airhead” by reminding interviewers she has built a multi-million dollar fortune as an actress, author and businesswoman.  But then so too I suspect is Mrs Rooney.

Other new entries in the Oxford tome include former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin who I thought was destined for well-merited obscurity – but apparently not.

Her quip, “What’s the difference between a hockey mom and a pit-bull? Lipstick,” will also feature in the latest edition of the 65-year-old book.

President Obama also made the grade, for his tribute to one of Martin Luther King’s most famous quotes.

“The arc of history is long, but it bends toward justice,” the President said, in homage to King, who made a similar remark at the Lincoln Memorial 40 years ago.  Good to see that plagiarists can get right to the top.  Next time maybe Obama can get one of his speech writers to come up with something original… like Paris Hilton.
