We all agree with NIck

Well, how exciting – we have had some presidential debates on television.  I don’t have Sky so I won’t see the second one.  But I did see the first.  And very strange it was too.  Why is it that a parliamentary election in which we all have a vote for a local candidate can be reduced to a beauty contest between three well-rehearsed leaders?

There is something rather strange about the whole thing.  The Tories had no doubt spent millions with some ad agency to come up with the same slogan as Barak Obama – vote for change.  Unfortunately nobody seemed to realise that was effectively the mantra of the Lib Dems.  Presumably Dave and his merry men were so arrogant they forgot that there was a third party in this election.  Certainly the ad agency did.

But most bizarre of all has been the placid way these ‘debates’ are being conducted.  Pardon me for being cynical but have we not just plunged into the worst economic crisis since, erm the last one.  And have we not been embroiled in not one but two decidedly iffy wars?

Worse still we have a prime minister who nobody has voted for apart from a few Scots in his constituency…. And a deputy prime minister that not only has nobody voted for – he has been dismissed for corruption nop0t once, but twice.  If this happened in a banana republic there would no doubt be a few complaints.  But in 21st century Britain it seems par for the course.  And that is without mentioning some clown called Lord Adonis that again, presumably, nobody has voted for.

SO pardon me if I don’t get overexcited about the TV debates.  However, there is one thing I agree with Nick on.  We need radical reform to the voting process.  When over 50% of the public don’t vote, something is badly wrong.  My vote would be for a system that allowed us to vote for none of the above.  Then perhaps if 50% of the British public voted for none of the above, we could reduce the number of Mps by 50%.  And would surely be most excellent?
