Car insurance is driving me potty

Why is it that car insurance companies put your policy up every year – even though you never make a claim.  And why is it that there are so many car insurance companies queuing up for your car insurance business  on-line when you get fed up and go somewhere else?

It ought to be illegal – but I doubt that this is really car insurance fraud.  Just rank bad business practice.  Only last year I got a 50% increase in my car insurance because my post code had changed.  Think about it… my house was now in a more high risk area apparently.

But getting car insurance is only half the battle.  Once you have an accident you have to make a claim.  And if you are lucky the person who crashed into you is insured.  So you might actually get some benefit from your insurance.  But of course, even if it was not your fault you end up getting punished with higher premiums.

A remarkably high number of car accident claims for compensation are fraudulent.  Which means of course that you and I have to pay for all that fraud too.  Which might explain the eye-wateringly high increase in premiums each year.  Except of course there are always other companies prepared to offer you a lower premium…until next year.

Another case of car insurance fraud must surely be what young drivers are expected to pay.  An unfortunate by-product of this apparently legal extortion is that so many young drivers forego the insurance and drive anyway.  So if they have accidents you and I pay for those too.

And so it goes on – a vicious cycle of declining service and standards. Driving more and more people to drive without insurance.  I guess we just have to hope that they are nor driving in our direction any time soon.
