Oasis Split Up

I gather from the news today that Oasis is no more.  I was more than a bit surprised to hear this as I thought Oasis split years ago.  Somehow the splitting of a group which basically consisted of two uncouth brothers who don’t speak to each other was considered compelling news.

The odd thing is that I am sure the fact that their principal rivals from Cool Britannia Britpop era, Blur was also newsworthy recently.  And I guess it is only a matter of time before we are treated to the news that Oasis have reformed.  After all, one the oxygen of publicity is turned off from talentless musicians; they usually want more of what they have been protesting about. 

There seems to be a rash of reforming going on at the moment.  It is even more contagious than swine flu.  I was even being tempted to go and see some old lags from the 1980’s like T’Pau going through their paces, accompanied by a few other groups and singers that prompted mirth in their heyday, let alone podgy middle age. 

T’pau are particularly interesting in that they seemed to make a career out of having one record.  But as Oasis fans now know, this is nothing new!  

Music is a strange business to be sure.  Every year you have the opportunity to see tribute bands like Bjorn Again satiate your deepest desire to see somebody hamming up old Abba tunes.  Just about everyone who is anyone has a tribute band.  And as some of the people being mimicked are now old age pensioners, it is a fair bet that the tribute bands are probably a lot better than the real thing.

I was slightly saddened that Led Zeppelin reformed however briefly.  People who grew up with that truly great band have the memories.  People who do not have the CDs, downloads and You-tube videos.  What you don’t need are to see some grey-haired old blokes go through a routine they haven’t even thought of for twenty years which is just a pale shadow of their former selves.
